Early fall windstorms in Frederick County hit trees while their canopies are still full, which makes this one of the riskiest times of year for limb failure.
Strong cold fronts over Catoctin Mountain and the remnants of tropical systems moving up the coast often arrive while leaves are still on. A leafed-out canopy catches wind like a sail, and when soil is also saturated, trees with weak branch unions, root damage, or internal decay are far more likely to drop limbs or uproot than in the same wind after leaf drop.
Several warning signs are worth checking now: cracks where large limbs meet the trunk, dead branches over the house or driveway, mushrooms at the base, and soil that heaves or cracks on one side of a tree after a windy day.
Watts Tree Experts provides storm preparation, tree removal, and storm cleanup for homeowners across Frederick and the surrounding area.
