Leaves that look lacy or skeletonized, with just the veins left behind, are the clearest sign that Japanese beetles are feeding on a tree right now.
They feed in groups and tend to return to the same trees and shrubs year after year, and a heavy season can leave a tree looking noticeably thin and stressed heading into fall.
It's rarely fatal for an established, otherwise healthy tree on its own, but a tree that's already dealing with drought stress or storm damage has less energy to spare for beetle feeding layered on top.
