Spotted lanternfly has been established in Frederick County for several seasons, and early summer nymph activity is one of the most visible stages of the pest's life cycle.
While it doesn't kill trees directly, repeated feeding stress weakens a range of Maryland tree species including black walnut, red maple, apple, and others. The sticky honeydew residue it produces promotes sooty mold and compounds the stress on trees already dealing with summer heat or other pressures. Trees in weakened condition from prior stress are the most vulnerable to compounding damage.
