Mulching Best Practices That Protect Tree Root Zones Through Maryland Summers

Post Copy

One of the most effective things you can do for a tree in Frederick right now costs almost nothing and takes 20 minutes. A proper mulch ring around the base of a tree is one of the single biggest factors in how well that tree handles summer heat, dry spells, and competing grass.

Here's what makes the difference. Mulch should be spread 2 to 4 inches deep in a ring that extends out to the drip line of the tree, not just a narrow collar around the base. And it should never be piled up against the bark, the so-called "mulch volcano" you see on a lot of properties. Mulch against the trunk traps moisture against the bark, encourages rot, and creates a pathway for pests. Pull it back a few inches from the base so the root flare is visible and breathing.

Done correctly, mulch conserves soil moisture, moderates temperature swings at the root zone, suppresses competing grass (which robs trees of water and nutrients), and gradually improves soil structure as it breaks down. For recently planted trees in particular, a proper mulch ring can dramatically improve survival rates through a first or second summer.

If you're unsure whether your trees have what they need heading into summer, our team is glad to take a look while we're out for an estimate. Visit wattstreeexperts.com to schedule. Does your property have any trees that haven't looked quite right since you had them planted?
