What a forestry degree and US Forest Service background brings to residential tree care

Post Copy

A lot of tree companies have crew members who are skilled climbers, experienced with a chainsaw, and good at what they do. That matters. But there's a different kind of preparation that comes from formal training in forest ecology, tree biology, and risk assessment, the kind you get from a university forestry program and years of field experience with the US Forest Service.

Our ISA Certified Arborist holds a degree from the UGA Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and brought real forest management experience from the US Forest Service before joining the private sector. The ISA Certified Arborist credential itself requires a passing score on a rigorous exam and ongoing continuing education. The TRAQ certification adds a structured risk assessment methodology on top of that. But the forestry degree is what underlies it all: a deep, systematic understanding of how trees work as living systems, not just as objects to be removed.

What does that mean in practice? It means that when our arborist looks at a tree on your Chattanooga property, they're evaluating root zone health, species-specific vulnerabilities, structural mechanics, and long-term trajectory, not just what's visible from the ground today. Recommendations from that kind of background tend to be more accurate, more conservative when conservation is warranted, and more decisive when action is needed.

We're proud to have that level of expertise on our team. It's one of the things that separates a tree service from a tree company. Subscribe to our newsletter at treeworxllc.com for more content like this.
