Fall webworms are showing up in pecan and oak trees across San Antonio right now, and the silky nests are hard to miss once they start forming at the ends of branches.
The webbing itself won't kill a healthy, established tree, but a heavy infestation can strip a branch of leaves and stress a tree that's already dealing with our tough summer heat. Newer or already-struggling trees are the ones most at risk.
Removing the nests early, before the caterpillars spread to new branches, keeps the damage contained and the tree looking better through the rest of the season. Pruning out the affected branch tips is usually enough on smaller infestations, without needing a broader treatment. We can take a look and let you know if treatment is needed or if it's just cosmetic.
