Bronzed, Wilting Leaves on a Red Oak Could Mean Oak Wilt

Post Copy

Bronzed, wilting leaves on a red oak are worth a second look this time of year.

Oak wilt can move through a red oak's vascular system within weeks, so early signs matter. Watch for leaf edges turning bronze or reddish, wilting that spreads quickly, and leaf drop outside the normal season.

Live oaks spread the disease differently, through connected root systems, which means one infected tree can put an entire block at risk over time.

Pruning wounds are a common entry point for the fungus, so timing and technique on any cut near an oak matter just as much as the cut itself.
