Crown raising and clearance pruning for structures and rooflines

Post Copy

Crown raising is one of the most practical things an arborist can do for a tree growing near a home or outbuilding — and it's one of the most misunderstood. It's not about making the tree look trimmed. It's about establishing proper clearance between the lower canopy and the structures, vehicles, and people beneath it.

For most residential trees in San Antonio, we recommend at least 10 feet of clearance from a roofline, and adequate space over driveways, patios, and walkways. Limbs that brush against your roof during a windstorm cause shingle damage over time, create moisture-trapping contact points that lead to rot, and during a significant storm event can cause serious structural damage. Clearance pruning addresses all of that before it becomes a problem.

Done right, crown raising doesn't compromise a tree's health. It's a targeted removal of the lowest branches, made with proper cuts at the branch collar so the tree closes over cleanly. It preserves the canopy height and density that make a mature tree valuable, while opening up the space below. What it is not: topping a tree, or removing large sections of canopy indiscriminately.

If you have mature trees that have grown into contact with your roof, fence, or utility lines, a clearance pruning assessment is worth scheduling before summer storm season is fully underway. Call 210-251-4232 or visit texastreeauthority.com to get on our schedule. Have any of your trees grown close enough to your home that you hear them rubbing against the roof during high winds?

Photo showing an arborist performing clearance pruning near a roofline or over a driveway, ideally with a San Antonio-area residential property visible. Before-and-after of a properly raised crown next to a home structure would be excellent. Authentic job photo strongly preferred.
