Ice-Loading Risk: Pruning Weak Limbs Before NE Ohio's First Freezing Rain

Post Copy

A glaze of freezing rain can add enormous weight to a tree's branches, and Northeast Ohio's ice storms find every weak limb.

The limbs most likely to fail have narrow, V-shaped attachments, internal decay, old storm cracks, or long reach over a roof, driveway, or power line. Silver maples, Bradford pears, and willows are common trouble spots in Girard and Youngstown yards.

Pruning those weak points before winter lightens the load and reduces the chance of a limb coming down during an ice storm, when roads are slick and emergency crews are stretched thin across the Valley.

Late October and November offer a good window. Leaves are thinning, structural problems are easier to spot, and the work gets done before the first hard freeze. A lighter, well-balanced canopy is the best defense a Mahoning Valley tree has against a heavy ice storm.

An authentic photo of the crew pruning a large limb over a home or driveway, with proper safety gear visible. A photo of ice-coated branches from a past Mahoning Valley winter would also work.
