The first frost in the Mahoning Valley is closer than it feels in late summer, and there are a few things worth checking before it arrives.
Trimming back dead or weak limbs now means less risk of ice or heavy snow snapping them later in the season. It is also a good time to look at drainage around root zones, since standing water combined with a hard freeze can stress roots that were already struggling through summer heat.
Trees that went through drought stress or storm damage over the summer are the ones most likely to have hidden weaknesses heading into winter, so those are worth a closer look first.
A little attention now, while the weather is still cooperative, goes a long way toward getting a tree through a Northeast Ohio winter in good shape.
