Girdling roots are one of the more overlooked threats to tree health in Memphis, and one of the hardest for a homeowner to catch without training. A girdling root wraps around the base of a tree or another root and slowly chokes it, cutting off nutrient and water flow as both grow.
These roots often form when a tree is planted too deep, or when a container-grown tree's roots were never properly straightened at planting. In Memphis's heavy clay, roots can also be pushed into unnatural growth patterns by compacted soil, making girdling more common than in sandier soils.
Signs include a trunk that looks like it goes straight into the ground without a natural flare, or a tree that seems to be declining for no obvious reason. Left unaddressed, girdling roots can eventually kill an otherwise healthy tree.
A root collar inspection by one of our ISA-certified arborists can catch this early enough to correct it.

Authentic job photo preferred: a close-up of a tree's root flare or base showing normal versus girdled root structure, or an arborist inspecting the base of a tree. Real diagnostic photos from a Memphis property are strongly preferred over generic root stock images.
