Crown Raising Lifts Low Limbs Clear of Piedmont Triad Driveways, Roofs, and Walkways

Post Copy

If you have to duck under a branch to get to your front door, or your truck scrapes a limb every time you back out of the driveway, crown raising is the fix. It's a pruning technique that removes the lowest branches to lift the canopy up and out of the way, without taking anything off the top of the tree.

Done right, it's more than sawing off whatever's in the way. We look at the tree's overall shape first, then remove low limbs so the tree keeps plenty of foliage and a strong, balanced structure. Cuts are made just outside the branch collar so the wounds close cleanly, and on young trees we raise the crown gradually over a few years rather than all at once.

The payoff goes beyond clearance. Lifting the canopy lets more light reach the lawn and garden beds, improves airflow that helps cut down on fungal problems, and opens up the view of the house from the street. Common targets are about 8 feet of clearance over walkways and 14 feet over driveways where trucks pass.

Which branch around your house do you find yourself ducking under most often?

A before/after pair showing low limbs over a driveway or front walk, then the same tree with the canopy lifted and clear space underneath. An in-progress shot of the Spartan crew making a pruning cut also works. Authentic job photos strongly preferred over stock.
