October Is the Best Month to Plant a Replacement Tree in the Piedmont Triad

Post Copy

If you had a tree removed this year and the stump's already been ground out, the next few weeks are the ideal time to put something new in the ground. Fall planting gives a young tree months of cool weather to grow roots before it has to face a Piedmont Triad summer.

Soil in the Triad stays warm well into November even as the air cools off, and that's exactly what new roots want. Trees planted now spend the winter settling in instead of fighting heat and drought, and they tend to leaf out stronger in spring than trees planted in April or May.

A few tips: pick a spot at least 15 to 20 feet from the house for anything that will grow large, plant so the root flare sits right at soil level, and keep watering through the fall until the ground gets cold. Native choices like red maple, willow oak, blackgum, and eastern redbud handle our red clay well.

If you could plant one new tree in your yard this fall, what would it be?
