A mature oak that took decades to grow can lose its structural integrity in a single lightning strike, and Metro Atlanta's summer storm pattern makes that a real risk for older trees on established properties. Lightning protection systems are one of the more underused tools for preserving a tree that has real value to a landscape.
The system works by installing a copper cable and grounding rods that give a lightning strike a safer path to the earth instead of through the trunk itself. It does not prevent a strike from happening, but it significantly reduces the chance of the tree being destroyed by one.
This kind of protection makes the most sense for large, healthy, high-value trees, the ones that shade a home, anchor a yard, or would be difficult and expensive to replace. Our arborists assess whether a tree is a good candidate before recommending it.
Do you have a large, older tree on your property that you would hate to lose to a summer storm?
