Documentation is one of the least glamorous parts of managed IT work, and one of the most important. At SMS-ITC, every fix, configuration change, and network adjustment gets recorded clearly enough that any team member could step in and understand exactly what was done and why.
That standard exists because institutional knowledge shouldn't live in one person's head. A business depending on outside IT support needs confidence that their systems are understandable, not a black box that only makes sense to whoever originally set it up. Clear documentation is what makes a support relationship durable through staff changes on either side.
It also matters most in the moments that count. When something breaks and a fix needs to happen quickly, a well-documented network is the difference between a fast resolution and starting from scratch to figure out what's even running.
For business owners and operations leaders: if your current IT provider left tomorrow, would the next one be able to understand your systems from the documentation left behind?
