What CMMC Compliance Means for Gwinnett Government Contractors

Post Copy

Government contractors in the Atlanta area are increasingly running into a compliance requirement many hadn't planned for: the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, or CMMC. If your business holds or plans to pursue federal contracts, particularly with the Department of Defense, CMMC compliance is quickly becoming a prerequisite rather than a nice-to-have.

CMMC requires documented cybersecurity practices across areas like access control, incident response, system monitoring, and data protection, all mapped to a specific maturity level depending on the sensitivity of the information involved. For a small or mid-size contractor without an internal IT security team, meeting these requirements from scratch can be a significant undertaking.

This is where a specialized IT partner becomes valuable well beyond day-to-day support. Understanding which controls apply to a given contract, documenting them correctly, and maintaining them over time is a different skill set than general IT support, and getting it wrong can jeopardize a contract before work even begins.

SMS-ITC works with regulated and government-adjacent businesses across Gwinnett to help make sense of these requirements in plain terms, not just compliance checklists.

For contractors and subcontractors in the room: how far along is your business in preparing for CMMC requirements on your current or upcoming contracts?
