Black Walnuts Are Dropping Across Madison County, and the Tree Overhead Deserves a Look Too

Post Copy

Black walnuts are dropping across Madison County right now, and the trees producing them often deserve a closer look.

Black walnut is one of the most common large trees in the Metro East. The green husks dent roofs and decks, stain driveways, and become projectiles under a mower. The roots, leaves, and husks also release juglone, a natural compound that keeps tomatoes and many garden plants from thriving nearby.

Walnuts are among the first trees to drop their leaves in fall, which makes this a good time to check the canopy. Mature trees often carry long, heavy limbs over roofs and driveways, and dead wood or broken branches stand out clearly once the leaves are gone. Removing dead limbs now also keeps them from coming down during winter ice storms.

Riverbend Outdoor Services provides tree trimming, pruning, and removal for homeowners in Alton, Godfrey, Edwardsville, and the surrounding Metro East, with careful cleanup on every job.

Image / Media Suggestion

A real photo of a mature black walnut over a local driveway or roofline, or a close-up of green walnut husks scattered on a driveway or lawn. A crew photo trimming a large walnut limb would also work well. Authentic photos of real Riverbend crews and job sites are strongly preferred over stock images.
