Emerald ash borer continues to affect ash trees across Madison County, and it remains one of the leading reasons for tree removal calls in Moro and the surrounding Metro East area. Once an ash tree is infested, decline can happen quickly.
Warning signs include thinning near the top of the canopy, bark that splits in vertical strips, and small D-shaped holes left by the beetles as they emerge. A dead ash becomes brittle and can pose a real hazard close to a home or driveway.
Homeowners in Bethalto, Godfrey, Wood River, and Edwardsville with ash trees on their property are encouraged to have them assessed while there's still time to make an informed decision about the tree.
