The best time to prune a tree is years before it becomes a problem, while it is still young and easy to shape.
Structural pruning on a young shade tree sets one strong central leader instead of two competing trunks, removes crossing and rubbing branches before they wound the bark, and builds the spacing that lets a mature canopy grow balanced and sound. The cuts are small, but they decide how the tree holds up decades later.
A young maple or oak shaped correctly is far less likely to split in a Metro East storm than one that grew co-dominant trunks with a weak union. We give a small tree in a Bethalto or Edwardsville yard the same care we give a large removal, because a structurally sound tree is one you never have to worry about.
