Emerald ash borer has been established in Illinois for years, and early summer is when the visible damage on infected ash trees typically becomes most apparent.
If you have ash trees on your property, look for D-shaped exit holes about the size of a pencil tip in the bark, S-shaped feeding galleries visible where the bark is peeling, dying branches starting at the upper canopy and progressing downward, and increased woodpecker activity on the trunk. An infested ash tree can decline rapidly, and the window for effective treatment or safe removal narrows quickly once symptoms are advanced.
