Fall Needle Drop on Upstate Pines Is Normal, but Browning at the Tips Is Worth a Closer Look

Post Copy

Fall needle drop on Upstate pines is normal: loblolly and shortleaf pines shed their oldest inner needles each year while the branch tips stay green. Browning that starts at the tips or the top of the tree is a different story.

Needles turning reddish across a whole section of the crown, or small, popcorn-like blobs of sap on the trunk, can point to drought stress or pine bark beetles, including southern pine beetle. Beetles can spread from one weakened pine to the next across Greenville, Greer, and Spartanburg neighborhoods.

The pattern of browning usually tells the story. Premier Tree Care's Certified Arborists help Upstate property owners tell normal seasonal shedding from a tree in trouble, so a beetle problem can be caught before it reaches healthy pines nearby.

Healthy, well-watered pines can often resist a light beetle attack with their own sap, which is why watering during dry fall weather and early inspection both make a real difference.
