A tree planted a few feet from a house looks fine for years. Then the roots grow, and what seemed like a harmless landscaping choice starts causing foundation cracks, driveway heaving, or plumbing issues nobody saw coming.
Root systems typically extend well beyond a tree's canopy, often two to three times the width, seeking moisture and nutrients. When that root growth runs into a foundation, sidewalk, or underground pipe, something has to give, and it's rarely the roots.
The fix depends on the situation. Sometimes root pruning or a barrier solves it. Other times, especially with larger species planted too close, removal or relocation before real structural damage happens is the more practical call.
