Why East Tennessee White Pines Turn Yellow Inside Every October

Post Copy

If the inside of your white pine turned yellow almost overnight, take a breath: this is usually completely normal.

Eastern white pines hold their needles for two to three years, then shed the oldest set each fall. Those inner needles yellow all at once in early to mid autumn and drop within a few weeks, while new growth at the branch tips stays green. Many homeowners notice it for the first time after a dry late summer, when the color change comes on quickly.

What is not normal: browning at the branch tips, yellowing throughout the whole tree, heavy sap oozing from the trunk, or dead needles that hang on. White pines in yards around Maryville and West Knoxville also struggle with heat, drought, and heavy clay soil.

Knowing the difference spares a healthy tree unnecessary worry and catches a declining one early, before it becomes a removal job.
