Late August into September is when Eastern NC's hurricane season tends to hit hardest, and the trees most likely to come down in a storm usually gave warning signs weeks before the wind arrived.
A pre-storm check looks for dead or hanging limbs that heavy wind and rain can turn into projectiles, trees leaning more than they used to, and any pine or hardwood showing thinning canopy that points to root or trunk weakness. Trees close to a house, driveway, or power line deserve the closest look, since a failure there isn't just inconvenient, it's expensive and potentially dangerous.
Handling this now, while the ground is dry and the weather is calm, is far easier than trying to schedule emergency removal once a storm is already bearing down on Mount Olive, Goldsboro, or Jacksonville.
