How to Tell If a Pine on Your Property Is at Risk of Falling

Post Copy

Loblolly pines are everywhere across Eastern NC, and most of them are perfectly healthy. But a few warning signs separate a stable pine from one that's a genuine risk.

Watch for needle drop that's heavier than normal for the season, a noticeable lean that wasn't there before, resin oozing from the trunk, or bark that's flaking off in patches. Pines with shallow, wind-damaged, or beetle-affected roots can also show subtle soil disturbance at the base before they ever visibly lean. Because pines tend to fail suddenly rather than gradually, these early signs matter more than they might for a hardwood.

Properties with pines close to a house, driveway, or fence line are worth a periodic look, especially ones that have been standing for decades without any professional assessment.

If a pine on your property has you asking questions, that's reason enough to get it checked.

Authentic job photo preferred: a pine showing needle drop, resin, or bark flaking, or a crew assessing a pine near a home. Real, local Eastern NC pine photos build far more trust than stock images.
