If the leaves on your beech tree show dark stripes between the veins, you may be looking at beech leaf disease.
Beech leaf disease is linked to a microscopic nematode and has spread through Connecticut, with Fairfield County among the hardest hit areas. It affects native American beech as well as the European beech found in many Greenwich and Darien landscapes.
Look for dark green bands between leaf veins, leaves that feel thick and leathery, and curled or shrunken foliage. Over several seasons, affected trees produce fewer leaves and buds, and the canopy thins out, weakening the tree over time. Right now, before the leaves drop, is a good time to check.
Not every striped leaf means a tree is lost, but monitoring matters. Our team helps homeowners understand what they are seeing and whether pruning or removal makes sense.

A close-up photo of a beech leaf showing dark banding between the veins is ideal, ideally from a real Fairfield County property. Authentic photos outperform stock images.
