Spongy Moth Defoliation Pressure on Connecticut Hardwoods Is Peaking This Month

Post Copy

Spongy moth (formerly called gypsy moth) caterpillars are active right now across Connecticut, and Fairfield County hardwoods are among the most vulnerable. Oaks, birches, and aspens are the preferred hosts. In a heavy outbreak year, a healthy tree can lose its entire canopy by mid-June, which puts it under serious stress heading into summer.

One season of complete defoliation can weaken a tree significantly. Back-to-back years of defoliation can kill even mature oaks. If you're seeing stripped branches, masses of caterpillars, or heavy frass dropping in your yard, it's worth having a professional assess the health of your trees before the damage compounds.

New England Tree serves Danbury, Ridgefield, Weston, Darien, Greenwich, and the broader Fairfield County area. We're a CTPA member and have been working with Connecticut homeowners on tree health and removal for generations. If you have trees showing stress this season, call (203) 790-8085 or email office@newenglandtree.us to schedule a free estimate.

Image / Media Suggestion

Best option: an authentic photo of a defoliated or stressed oak canopy, close-up of spongy moth egg masses or caterpillars on bark, or crew assessing a tree with visible defoliation damage. Real Connecticut job photos strongly preferred. If no matching photo is available, a before/after of a tree that was assessed and treated (or removed after repeated defoliation) makes a strong alternative.
