Cutting and Welding Galvanized Square Steel Without Giving Up Its Rust Protection

Post Copy

Galvanized square steel is a favorite for gates, fence posts, carports, and trailer frames around Northwest Atlanta because its zinc coating holds off rust through wet Georgia winters. The catch is that every cut, drill hole, and weld opens a gap in that protection, and how you handle those spots decides how long the project actually lasts.

Cut ends and drilled holes leave bare steel exposed, so touch them up with a zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound once the metal is clean. Welding is where extra care matters most: the zinc burns off near the weld and gives off fumes you shouldn't breathe, so grind the coating back around the joint, weld with good ventilation and proper respiratory protection, then recoat the finished weld.

Metal Supermarkets has a full guide to galvanized square steel, covering what it is, where it makes sense, and when another material is a better pick. The link is in the comments. Ask our Marietta counter about galvanized square tube and have it cut to length, so you're making fewer cuts and leaving fewer bare ends to touch up.

What's the outdoor project on your list this fall that needs to stand up to the weather?

Authentic photo of galvanized square tube being cut on the saw at the Marietta location, or a close-up of a cut end next to a can of cold galvanizing compound. A finished outdoor gate or fence frame from a customer also works. Real photos strongly preferred over stock. No Google Drive image folder is set up for this client yet, so request a real photo from the Marietta location.
