Aluminum Melts Far Below Steel, and That Changes How You Cut and Weld It

Post Copy

Aluminum melts at about 1,220°F, far below most steel, and that difference changes how it is cut, welded, and formed. For fabricators moving between steel and aluminum jobs, understanding that gap prevents a lot of wasted material.

Aluminum gives no color warning before it melts, it pulls heat away from the joint quickly, and its surface oxide melts at a much higher temperature than the metal underneath, so clean joints and the right settings matter. Alloying elements also shift the melting range compared to pure aluminum. Many welders keep a stainless brush for aluminum only and use it right before welding to remove oxide without contaminating the joint.

Metal Supermarkets Atlanta in Marietta stocks aluminum sheet, plate, bar, tube, angle, and channel, cut to size with no minimum order, for welders, fabricators, and hobbyists across Cobb County, Kennesaw, Roswell, and Northwest Atlanta. Our counter team can help match the right alloy to the application, from 6061 for structural work to 5052 sheet for forming.
