Specifying Perforated vs. Expanded Metal for Architectural and Security Screening

Perforated sheet and expanded metal both show up in specs calling for an open, ventilated, or screened surface, and the two get mixed up more often than they should. The manufacturing process behind each one drives real differences in strength, cost, and appearance.

Perforated sheet begins as a solid material with holes punched in a controlled pattern. That process gives precise control over open area percentage and hole geometry, which makes it well suited for architectural screens, acoustic panels, and filtration applications where a clean, uniform look matters.

Expanded metal is produced differently. The material is slit and then stretched into a diamond pattern without removing any metal, which preserves more strength per pound and keeps material cost down relative to the coverage area. That trade-off makes it a common choice for security fencing, catwalks, and industrial guarding where strength and open visibility matter more than a precise, uniform pattern.

Getting the spec right up front avoids a costly reorder mid-project, especially on larger architectural or industrial jobs where the material choice affects both structural performance and appearance.
