Grade selection for stainless steel is one of the more common specification questions we field from engineers and shop managers, particularly for parts destined for outdoor or corrosive environments in the Atlanta area.
304 stainless offers solid general-purpose corrosion resistance and covers the majority of fabrication needs at a more accessible price point. 316 introduces molybdenum into the alloy, which meaningfully improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides, whether from coastal exposure, chemical processing, or pool environments.
Over-specifying 316 across an entire project when 304 would perform adequately adds unnecessary material cost. Under-specifying it in a genuinely corrosive application creates a maintenance and failure risk down the line. Getting the grade right the first time protects both budget and long-term performance.
