Not every customer who walks in knows the grade, the alloy, or even the right shape for what they're building. That's normal, and it's exactly what the team behind the counter is there for. A first-time welder building a trailer frame gets the same patient walk-through as a shop that's ordered from us for fifteen years.
The goal isn't to upsell anyone into more material than a project needs. It's asking the right questions, what's it for, what's it exposed to, does it need to hold weight or just look good, and matching the answer to the right stock on the shelf. That kind of conversation is hard to get from an online order form.
It's a big part of why customers keep coming back even when a big box store is closer. Knowledgeable help at the counter, not just inventory on a shelf, is the actual product.
What's a question you wish someone had asked you before you bought material for a project that didn't turn out right?
