Oak wilt is one of the most serious tree diseases in North Texas, and it spreads fastest during the warmer months when sap beetles are most active.
Live oaks are especially vulnerable. Watch for leaves that turn brown starting at the tips and margins, and pay attention to whether the browning is spreading from one tree to adjacent trees, since the fungus can travel through connected root systems. Post oak and red oak show rapid wilting and leaf drop, often across the entire canopy in a matter of weeks.
Pruning wounds made in late spring and summer are the most common entry points. If you are planning any trimming on your oaks, timing and wound treatment matter.
