Crown Raising or Crown Thinning? Choosing the Right Pruning for an East End Property

Post Copy

Two of the most requested pruning jobs on the East End sound similar but solve very different problems.

Crown raising removes lower limbs to create clearance over lawns, driveways, walkways, and pool areas. It opens sightlines and lets light reach the ground, but taking too much from the bottom can leave a tree top-heavy.

Crown thinning selectively removes interior branches throughout the canopy so wind passes through and light filters in, without changing the tree's overall shape. It is often the better choice on exposed coastal properties in Montauk or Amagansett, where wind load matters.

Many properties benefit from a careful combination of both. An itemized plan that explains which cuts will be made, and why, keeps the result polished and the tree healthy for years.
