Oak Wilt on Long Island: Why Late Fall and Winter Are the Safe Window for Pruning East End Oaks

Post Copy

Oak wilt has been confirmed on Long Island, and when oaks get pruned is one of the simplest ways to limit its spread.

The disease is carried by sap beetles drawn to fresh wounds on oaks during the growing season. New York guidance is to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from April through July, which makes late fall and winter the preferred window.

Signs of oak wilt include leaves browning from the edges inward in midsummer and rapid leaf drop on red and black oaks. White oaks tend to decline more slowly.

For East Hampton, Southampton, and Sag Harbor properties with mature oaks, planning structural pruning and deadwood removal for the dormant months protects both the trees and the neighborhood canopy. It is a small timing choice that makes a real difference.
