Browning Pine Needles After Storm Season: Checking North Florida Pines for Bark Beetles

Post Copy

A pine turning yellow or reddish brown from the top down is often a sign of bark beetles, not just dry weather.

After a season of heat, heavy rain, and storm winds, many North Florida pines are stressed, which makes them targets for Ips engraver beetles and other bark beetles. Common signs include popcorn-like lumps of sap on the trunk, reddish boring dust in bark crevices or at the base, and needles fading quickly from green to brown. Lightning-struck pines and trees bent by storm winds are the most likely to be hit.

A heavily infested pine usually can't be saved, and a dead pine turns brittle quickly, which makes it a hazard near homes, driveways, and power lines. Prompt removal can also reduce the chance of beetles spreading to nearby pines.

Kari's Tree Service provides tree removal and precision rigging across Lake City and North Florida, with straightforward assessments and clear pricing.
