Heavy Snow and Evergreen Limbs: Preparing Roanoke Valley Pines and Cedars for Winter

Post Copy

Wet, heavy snow is one of the biggest winter threats to evergreens across the Roanoke Valley.

Unlike oaks and maples, white pines, Leyland cypress, cedars, and other evergreens keep their foliage all winter, and that foliage catches snow and ice. Evergreens planted as privacy screens along property lines are especially prone to this kind of damage. A single storm can bend long limbs to the breaking point, split trees with multiple leaders, or snap the tops of pines already weakened by age or disease.

Late fall is a practical time to address these risks. Removing dead or cracked limbs, reducing overextended branches, and evaluating evergreens with weak or split trunks can lower the chance of winter damage, especially for trees close to homes, driveways, and power lines.

Integrity Tree Service has cared for trees in Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Cave Spring, Bonsack, Hollins, Daleville, and Boones Mill for more than 40 years, with safety and careful workmanship on every job.
