How Canopy Thinning Protects Bellingham-Area Trees from Wind Damage

Post Copy

Canopy thinning is one of the most misunderstood services in tree care — and one of the most valuable for properties in Whatcom County, where wind is a constant seasonal factor.

When a tree's crown is too dense, it acts like a sail: the wind has nowhere to pass through, so it pushes on the whole structure at once. Selective thinning removes interior branches to open up the canopy, reducing wind resistance without changing the tree's shape or removing healthy limbs you want to keep. The tree stays strong, looks great, and handles the next storm far better. It's especially important for large Douglas firs, big-leaf maples, and mature ornamental trees close to structures.

This isn't a job for a ladder and a handsaw. Proper thinning requires understanding the tree's structure, knowing which branches carry the most weight, and removing the right material without over-pruning. Our arborists assess each tree individually and work to a specific goal — not just a general "cut some branches" approach.

Image / Media Suggestion

Authentic job photo preferred: an in-progress or completed canopy thinning shot showing the interior of a large tree being worked, or a before/after comparison of a dense canopy versus a thinned, open structure. A wide shot showing the full tree after thinning, with a clean visible structure, is very effective. Avoid images that show topping or stub cuts.
