Southern Maryland's Dry Stretch Is Pushing Mature Trees Into Drought Stress

Post Copy

Several weeks without significant rain will do more damage to a mature tree than most homeowners realize. Drought stress doesn't always show up as obviously wilted leaves. Often it looks like early yellowing, leaf drop out of season, or a canopy that seems thinner than it did in spring.

Trees across Bryans Road, Waldorf, and the surrounding Southern Maryland communities are starting to show these signs after this summer's dry stretch. Established trees with deep root systems can usually handle short dry periods, but extended drought puts real strain on their ability to take up water and nutrients.

Left unaddressed, drought-stressed trees become more vulnerable to insect infestation and disease over the following seasons, even after rain returns. A proper assessment can determine whether a tree needs supplemental watering, mulching, or another form of support to recover fully.

If trees on your property look different than they did a month or two ago, it's worth having them checked before the stress compounds.
