Planting a Replacement Tree This Fall Starts With Picking the Right Spot

Post Copy

Fall is one of the best times to plant a replacement tree in Gloucester County, because cool air eases stress while warm soil keeps roots growing until the ground freezes. A tree planted now gets a head start before next summer's heat.

Location matters more than species. Check the tag for mature height and spread, keep large shade trees well away from the house, septic field, and overhead lines, and have underground utilities marked before digging. Avoid the exact spot where an old stump was ground, since wood chips and decaying roots make a poor planting bed, and shift a few feet over into native soil.

Plant so the root flare sits at grade, keep mulch in a flat ring away from the trunk, and water deeply through the fall. Greg Smith Tree Service, a licensed, family-owned company in Franklinville, sees every day how a tree planted in the right place avoids problems decades later.
