How to Identify Pine Bark Beetle Damage on South Georgia Pines

Post Copy

Pine bark beetles are active across South Georgia, and by the time you notice the visible damage, the tree is often already beyond saving. Knowing what to look for early makes the difference between treatment and removal.

Watch for these signs: reddish-brown boring dust at the base of the tree or in bark crevices, small round entry holes in the bark, yellowing needles starting in the upper canopy, and pitch tubes (small gobs of resin) where the beetles bored in. A tree with heavy infestation will begin losing needles rapidly from the top down.

Drought stress and storm damage make pines more vulnerable. If you've noticed any of these symptoms on loblolly, longleaf, or slash pines on your property, a professional assessment can determine whether treatment or removal is the right next step.

A close-up photo of pine bark beetle damage on a local pine tree (boring dust, pitch tubes, or entry holes), or a photo of a pine removal job in the SW Georgia area. Real documentation of actual job conditions carries far more credibility than stock photography of pine trees.
