First Heavy Rain After a Dry Summer: Why East Bay Trees Topple Early in the Rainy Season

Post Copy

Some of the East Bay's worst tree failures don't happen in the biggest storm of the year. They happen in the first soaking rain after a long, dry summer.

After months without water, trees in Oakland, Berkeley, and Lafayette carry a full canopy while their roots sit in hard, dry ground. When the first strong system arrives, saturated soil loses its grip and wind catches that heavy crown. Shallow-rooted trees and trees with roots damaged by trenching or construction are most at risk.

Before the rainy season settles in, look for cracked or mounded soil at the base, a new lean, mushrooms near the roots, or dead limbs in the upper crown.

Our crews thin heavy canopies to reduce wind load and remove trees that are no longer stable, the same careful way we have worked in East Bay neighborhoods for more than 50 years.

A real photo of a large tree with a full canopy over a home, or a rain-soaked uprooted tree from a past East Bay job, fits this post. Authentic job photos outperform stock images.
