A homeowner in Duluth called after noticing a crack running down the trunk of a mature water oak near the driveway. What looked like a cosmetic issue turned out to be a structural split extending well into the tree's core.
Water oaks are common across Metro Atlanta and grow fast, but they're also prone to internal decay and included bark that weakens the union between major limbs over time. This one had both, and the lean toward the house made removal the safer call over cabling.
The crew took the tree down in sections to protect the driveway and a nearby fence line, and cleared the debris the same day. What could have been an expensive, unpredictable failure became a planned, controlled removal instead.
Not every crack means removal, but a split trunk near a structure is worth a professional look sooner rather than later.
