Mistletoe Clumps Get Easier to Spot as Bakersfield's Shade Trees Start to Thin for Fall

Post Copy

As Bakersfield trees begin to lose their leaves, leafy mistletoe becomes easy to see in ash, elm, cottonwood, and mulberry canopies.

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that roots into branches and draws water and nutrients from its host. A heavy infestation weakens limbs, adds stress during Kern County's hot summers, and spreads as birds carry seeds between trees.

Fall and winter are the ideal time to address it. The clumps are easy to spot, and pruning is less stressful for the tree. Removing infected branches well below the clump takes out the root system inside the wood; breaking off only the green growth usually lets it return.

General Tree Service has cared for trees across Bakersfield and Kern County since 1945, combining multigenerational experience with modern arboricultural science.
