Repeated stretches of triple-digit heat can cause sunscald on young or thin-barked trees, a condition where direct sun literally damages living tissue under the bark.
It shows up as sunken, discolored patches or bark that cracks and peels away, usually on the side of the trunk facing the most afternoon sun.
Trees recently pruned to remove a lot of canopy are especially at risk since less shade on the trunk means more direct exposure than usual.
