Crown Thinning Lets Light and Air Back Through Mature Franklin and Brentwood Trees

Post Copy

Crown thinning lets more light and air through mature trees in Franklin and Brentwood without changing their natural shape. A dense canopy can shade out lawns and gardens, trap moisture, and catch more wind during storms. Mature oaks, maples, and elms in established neighborhoods are common candidates.

Proper thinning selectively removes smaller crossing, rubbing, weak, and crowded branches throughout the crown. Only a modest share of live foliage is removed in one visit, and interior branches stay in place so limbs keep their strength. The result is a canopy that still provides shade but lets filtered light reach lawns and beds below.

Thinning is not the same as stripping out inner branches or topping a tree, both of which weaken it and invite decay. Late fall and winter are a good time to thin many species because branch structure is easy to see once leaves drop. Franklin Tree Service's ISA Certified Arborist plans each cut around the tree's long-term health.

A real before/after pair from a Franklin Tree Service crown thinning job, showing a dense mature canopy and the same tree opened up evenly with its natural shape intact, ideally with more light reaching the lawn. Before/after photos are the highest-performing format; no stock.
