Crown Thinning Lets Light and Air Back Through Mature Franklin and Brentwood Trees

Post Copy

Mature trees are a big part of what makes Franklin and Brentwood neighborhoods feel established. Over time, though, a dense canopy can shade out lawns and gardens, trap moisture, and catch a lot of wind. Crown thinning is the pruning service that addresses all three without changing the character of the tree.

Done properly, thinning selectively removes smaller branches throughout the crown, focusing on crossing, rubbing, weak, and crowded limbs. The goal is to open the canopy evenly so light and air reach the interior while keeping the tree's natural shape. Good practice removes only a modest share of live foliage in one visit, and the interior branches stay in place so limbs keep their strength.

What thinning is not: stripping out every inner branch and leaving foliage only at the tips, or cutting the top back to stubs. Both weaken the tree and invite decay. Late fall and winter are a good time to thin many species, since the branch structure is easy to see once the leaves are off.
