Emerald ash borer has been steadily working through Middle Tennessee's ash trees for years, and damage is often already serious by the time it becomes obvious.
Early signs include thinning in the upper canopy, bark splitting to reveal S-shaped tunnels underneath, and small D-shaped exit holes. Woodpecker activity on the bark is often a giveaway too.
Caught early, some ash trees can be treated and preserved. Caught late, removal is usually the only safe option left.
