A homeowner in Media called after noticing a large crack forming where a major limb met the trunk of an old silver maple, months after a summer storm had passed through.
On inspection, the crack extended deeper into the trunk than it appeared from the ground, and the tree's overall structure had been compromised. Silver maples grow fast and can look full and healthy while carrying exactly this kind of hidden internal damage.
Cabling wasn't a realistic option once the trunk itself was compromised, not just a limb. The safer path was a full removal, done carefully to protect the home, a nearby fence, and the rest of the yard.
It's a reminder that storm damage doesn't always show up right away, and a tree that looks fine weeks later can still be carrying a serious structural problem underneath.
