English ivy climbing a Douglas fir can look charming, but it adds weight, holds moisture against the bark, and hides decay an arborist needs to see. Left unchecked, it can smother the lower trunk and make a sound tree look questionable, or a hazardous tree look sound.
Ivy is one of the most widespread invasive plants in the Portland metro. Once it reaches the canopy, it catches more wind in winter storms and can eventually shade out the tree's own foliage.
The safest method is a survival ring: cut every ivy stem at shoulder height and again near the ground, then peel the vines off the lower trunk and clear a ring a few feet wide around the base. Leave the upper vines to die and loosen on their own, since pulling them down can strip bark.
For heavily covered trees or ivy that has reached high limbs, our crew removes it safely and checks the trunk underneath for rot or damage once it is exposed.
